I’m always looking for a good read when I’m on the road but what I love more is reading books that make me want to discover their settings in person! Here are 5 books that will inspire you to travel!

Little Princes

Author: Conor Grennan

Setting: Nepal

Plot: A true story about a young man who takes a year off to travel the world.  He begins his journey in Nepal where he decides to volunteer for 3 months.  He soon finds out that the orphans actually have living family members  and he sets out to reunite them risking his life in the process. Absolutely amazing story and inspired me to go to Nepal and I’m so glad I did!

Author: Gregory David Roberts

Setting: India

Plot: Loosely based on a true story, an Australian man escapes prison and flees to India.  For 10 years, he lives in the slums of Mumbai working in the black market.  It’s a fascinating book with not only a good story line but a beautiful vivid description of Mumbai that will make you think twice before you say….”I have no interest in visiting India”.

First They Killed My Father

Plot: In 1975 Pol Pot’s army stormed Phnom Penh and forced the entire city to flee to the country side.  This documents Loung’s unforgettable story and harrowing experiences that will make it hard to put down.  You’ll also learn a lot about what went on in Cambodia in the 1970’s under that horrible regime. You will be shocked.

A Walk in the Woods

Author: Bill Bryson

Setting: Appalachian Trail
